kyleandClaude Opus 5.5 aafc1d1c28 P5a review: outlines from named destinations; pool race; fast over-limit; revalidation under the limiter; Accept pdf
- pdftext/outline: resolve named destinations through the catalog /Dests and the /Names /Dests
  tree, resolve indirect /Dest, /A and /Title, and treat reader.Null (what Dict.Get returns for
  a missing key) as absent. Before this every LaTeX and Acrobat PDF had an empty outline.
  pdftest gains NamedDests; TestOutlineNamedDestinations.
- api: pool() always goes through its Once (data race on concurrent first use);
  TestDefaultPoolConcurrentFirstUse. Revalidation of a stale cache entry counts against the
  caller/host limit.
- pdftext/runner: output over MaxText kills the child at once instead of waiting for the
  deadline; TestRunnerTooMuchTextFailsFast.
- fetch: Accept includes application/pdf;q=0.8.

kyleandornith-1.5-35b-a3b 7e78de633f P5a: digests cite pages; sift_pdf_* metrics; sift fetch --pages/--grep; skill, unit and README
Digest systemPrompt gains a page-cite instruction and PromptVersion is 3.
Add the sift_pdf_* metric series (extract_total{outcome}, extract_seconds,
pages_total, pool_wait_seconds, cache_hits_total) to internal/metrics and wire
ObservePDF/ObservePDFWait/PDFCacheHit into internal/api/pdf.go. Refactor
cmd/sift/fetchcmd.go to a fetchOpts struct with parseFetchOpts and fetchBody,
adding --pages/--grep. Update skill/SKILL.md, set nix MemoryMax to 1G, and add a
PDF documents section to the README.

kyleandornith-1.5-35b-a3b 09f738bcac api: PDF cache with revalidation; pages and grep; refuse questions on very long documents
Answer extracted PDFs from the document cache: fresh for PDFTTL, then a
conditional GET (304 reuses the stored text, a 200 is extracted and stored
without a second GET). Store after extraction with the response hash, ETag,
fetch time and extracted pages. Route pages/grep through pdfdoc.Options with
400s for bad ranges and non-PDFs, and refuse a question when the document
exceeds PDFMaxQuestionChunks with a pointer to grep and pages.

kyleandornith-1.5-35b-a3b 93ec310113 api: serve PDFs — extraction in the child under the pool, full text or map, errors
Route "pdf" through clean.Kind in doFetch/cleanFetched: extract under the pool
(keyed by caller class + document hash, one per caller), map the five pdftext
errors plus a pool panic to 422, ErrBusy to 503+Retry-After 10, ErrCallerBusy to
429, and answer with the whole text or the map. Adds RetryAfter to fetch.Error
and the matching header. No cache, pages or grep — those are task 07.

kyleandornith-1.5-35b-a3b 41a68feb06 pdfdoc: page markers, the map for long documents, page ranges, grep
Pure render function on a *pdftext.Doc with no I/O: the whole text with
page markers when it fits, otherwise a map (title, outline with page
numbers, leading pages and how to ask for more), a page range, or grep
results with page numbers. Every length is in runes.

kyleandornith-1.5-35b-a3b bb9a6544d1 pdfpool: a few extraction slots, a short queue, single-flight, one job per caller
Generic in-process scheduler for the expensive PDF-extraction child process.
A pool runs at most `slots` jobs, keeps at most `queue` waiting, and refuses a
waiter past `wait`. Do() applies six rules in order: join an existing running
or queued job (no slot, allowed while the caller holds another, fn may be nil);
refuse a caller that already has a job in flight; take a free slot, else queue
(first-come-first-served, else ErrBusy); run fn under context.WithoutCancel so
the flight outlives a caller that leaves; broadcast the result to every sharer
with no caching and a recovered panic returned as an error. Running counts only
jobs holding a slot; Queued counts the line; Waiting(key) counts joiners.

kyleandornith-1.5-35b-a3b b93b7d5816 dcache: PDF document cache (per URL and caller class, whole-document eviction)
Add pdf_doc/pdf_page tables plus PDFEntry, PDFKey, PutPDF (one transaction,
old pages deleted first), GetPDF (page-ordered, updates last_hit) and TouchPDF
(304 revalidation moves only fetched_at). PDF documents count toward Size() and
are evicted whole by oldest use; PDFH/PDFM counters added. evict() now breaks
last_hit ties by rowid so same-second inserts evict in insertion order.

kyleandornith-1.5-35b-a3b f57aaef59e pdftext: extract PDF text in a re-exec'd child (sift pdftext) with a deadline
The parser is pure Go but a goroutine cannot be killed, so extraction runs in
a child process: the binary re-executed as `sift pdftext`, reading the PDF on
stdin and writing JSON Lines on stdout, killed at a deadline by the parent.

pdftext.go holds the types, the five errors, Extract (reader.Open with
ErrWrongPassword -> ErrEncrypted, per-page recover, trailer /Info /Title, and
rule-3 UTF-16BE/Latin-1 text decode) and ChildMain (soft 768 MiB memory limit,
-no env read, no network, exit codes 0/3/4/1). outline.go walks /Outlines ->
/First -> /Next with /First children at level+1, resolving /Dest and /GoTo /A
dests to 1-based pages, bounded at 10,000 items and never visiting an object
twice. runner.go is the Runner: env-isolated child (nil env is an empty
environment), 60 s deadline, 64 MiB output cap, 200 MiB stdin cap, stderr
capped at 4 KiB, exit-code to error mapping, and Doc parsing with ErrNoText.
cmd/sift/main.go adds the unlisted `pdftext` case. tools.go is removed; the
go-pdfkit modules stay vendored.

kyleandornith-1.5-35b-a3b 13365a2daa clean, fetch: recognise PDFs; 100 MB / 120 s for PDFs; FetchIf revalidates
Recognise PDFs in clean.Kind (declared types and %PDF- sniffing on
octet-stream/bodyless bodies), give PDF responses the 100 MB body cap and
120 s deadline while web pages keep 5 MB / 20 s, and add FetchIf, which
sends If-None-Match / If-Modified-Since and maps a 304 to a Resource with
Status 304 and an empty Body. Fetch and FetchIf share one doFetch path for
guard, client, limits and error mapping.

## PDF documents
A resource whose content type (or magic bytes) look like a PDF is extracted instead of cleaned.
Extraction runs in a **child process** — the `sift pdftext` subcommand of this binary, built on the
`go-pdfkit/extract` v0.3.0 engine, chosen by the bake-off in [`docs/P5a.md`](docs/P5a.md) §3 — so a
malicious PDF can't take down the server: the child is isolated (empty environment, native syscalls
only), killed at a deadline, and its output capped.
Limits: a PDF may be **100 MB** and take up to **120 s** to download; extraction is capped at
**60 s** and **2,000 pages**, with child output bounded to 64 MiB. Extraction runs under a **pool**
of **2 slots**, **4 waiting**, a **20 s** wait cap — a caller that can't get a slot gets `503 busy`,
and a caller with a job already in flight gets `429`. A PDF already extracted is answered from the
**cache** for **24 h**, then revalidated with a conditional GET (a `304` reuses the stored text).
Answers (through `/v1/fetch` or `/v2/scrape`):
- whole text when it fits the output cap, each page prefixed with `--- page N ---`;
- otherwise a **map** — the outline (with page numbers) and the first pages;
- `--pages 41-60` for a range, `--grep 'pattern'` for matching lines with page context;
- `--question "…"` for a **digest** that, on a PDF, cites each fact as `(p. N)`.
Scanned PDFs have no text layer and return `no text layer (scanned PDF?)`; point them at an OCR
source rather than fixing them here.
Errors (all `422` unless noted — a PDF never yields a `500`):
| cause | Status | Message | Hint | Retry-After |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| no text layer (`ErrNoText`) | 422 | `no text layer (scanned PDF?)` | `ocr` | — |
| encrypted (`ErrEncrypted`) | 422 | `encrypted PDF (password required)` | — | — |
| unreadable (`ErrUnreadable`) | 422 | `unreadable PDF` | — | — |
| timeout (`ErrTimeout`) | 422 | `pdf extraction timed out` | — | — |
| too much text (`ErrTooMuchText`) | 422 | `pdf text over the output limit` | — | — |
| pool full (`ErrBusy`) | 503 | `pdf workers busy` | — | 10 |
| caller busy (`ErrCallerBusy`) | 429 | `busy` | — | — |
| anything else (e.g. a recovered panic) | 422 | `unreadable PDF` | — | — |
Metrics (scraped at `http://127.0.0.1:8890/metrics`): `sift_pdf_extract_total{outcome}`
(`ok`, `no_text`, `encrypted`, `unreadable`, `timeout`, `too_large`, `busy`, or `other`),
`sift_pdf_extract_seconds`, `sift_pdf_pages_total`, `sift_pdf_pool_wait_seconds`, and
`sift_pdf_cache_hits_total`.

| Task | Date | Status | Sessions | Gate | Deviations | Summary |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| p5a/01-kind-fetch | 2026-09-25 | done | resumed | gate: ok | none | Implemented Kind/`application/pdf` recognition, PDF body cap (100 MB) and deadline (120 s), and FetchIf with If-None-Match/If-Modified-Since via shared doFetch. Previous session could not pass TestFetchIf only because the given test held its mutex across the handler (deadlock); owner fixed the test. Session resumed after that fix — did not rewrite fetch code, only verified rules and ran gate. |
| p5a/02-pdftext | 2026-09-25 | done | 1 | gate: ok | none | Built the child-extraction package: `Extract` (reader.Open with ErrWrongPassword→ErrEncrypted, per-page recover, trailer /Info /Title, rule-3 UTF-16BE/Latin-1 decode), `outline.go` (/Dest and /GoTo /A dests, 10k-item and no-double-visit bounds, never-nil outline), `Runner` (re-exec'd child, env-isolated via empty env, 60 s deadline, 64 MiB output cap, 200 MiB stdin cap, stderr capped at 4 KiB, exit-code→error mapping, Doc parse plus ErrNoText), and the `sift pdftext` case in main.go. Removed the tools.go module pin; go.mod/go.sum/vendor/modules.txt confirmed unchanged. All 10 given tests pass under -race -count=3 including the deadline-kill test; make gate ok; given files byte-identical; `printf nope | bin/sift pdftext` exits 4. |
| p5a/03-dcache | 2026-09-25 | done | 1 | gate: ok | evict() tie-break | Added the pdf_doc/pdf_page tables, `PDFEntry`/`PDFKey`/`PutPDF`/`GetPDF`/`TouchPDF` (one-tx write deleting old pages first, page-ordered read, 304 touch moves only fetched_at), PDFH/PDFM counters, `Size()` including pdf_doc nbytes. One deviation: extended the eviction union with `pdf_doc` and added `rowid ASC` to the ORDER BY so same-second puts evict in insertion order (deterministic whole-document eviction); without it TestPDFEviction is order-dependent. Left Stats() signature unchanged for task 07. Given test byte-identical. |
| p5a/04-pdfpool | 2026-09-25 | done | 1 | gate: ok | none | Implemented the generic scheduler. `Pool` holds one mutex, a `jobs` map (key→in-flight job), a `callerJobs` map (caller→their job), and a FIFO `waiters` line. `Do` applies the six rules in order: join (counted in `Waiting`, no slot, allowed while the caller holds another job, `fn` may be nil), caller-busy, then slot/queue/refuse. A job's result is broadcast to every sharer via a `done` channel; results are not cached (key forgotten on finish). `fn` runs under `context.WithoutCancel` so the flight outlives a caller that leaves. Panic in `fn` is recovered into an error, freed the slot and caller. One implementation finding (not a plan deviation): queued jobs must not be counted in `Running()`, so `startLocked` only registers a job and a separate `takeSlotLocked`/`grant` increments the slot count — abandoning a queued starter (`abandon`) releases sharers without touching the slot. Given test byte-identical. |
| p5a/05-pdfdoc | 2026-09-25 | done | 1 | gate: ok | none | Implemented the render package with no I/O on a `*pdftext.Doc`. `Marker`/`Full` print each extracted page as `--- page N ---`, text trimmed, joined by a blank line. `Render` dispatches grep → page range → whole. Whole fits in OutCap runes, else a map: title (or `Untitled PDF`)/pages/`~tokens` line with `pages 1-E extracted` only when fewer extracted than `Pages`, a cuttable `## Outline` (two-space indent per level below 1, cut before the header/instruction), the instruction line, and whole leading pages within OutCap/4 (at least page 1, cut to fit). Range parses `a-b`/`a`/`a-`, wraps out-of-range in `ErrBadPages` with `pages out of range (1-E)`, clamps `b`, caps at 100 pages and OutCap runes, and notes the rest as `pages="k-b"`. Grep is RE2 with smart-case `(?i)` prefix, 200-byte cap, per-line matches with previous/next page context in `p. P-`/`p. P:` form, first 100 shown, total counted; RE2 keeps the `(a+)+$` test linear. Every length is in runes. Given test byte-identical; make gate ok. |
| p5a/06-api-pdf | 2026-09-26 | done | resumed | gate: ok (7 of 10 PDF tests; 3 are task 07's) | none | Served PDFs through `/v1/fetch` (clean) and `/v2/scrape`. Added `RetryAfter int` to `fetch.Error` and a `Retry-After` header line guarded by `> 0`. Added `PDFRunner`/`PDFPool`/`PDFTTL`/`PDFMaxQuestionChunks` Server fields (PDFPool built once via `sync.Once` only when nil, so the test's direct override is respected) and `pdfPoolOnce`. Routed `clean.Kind` in `doFetch`/`cleanFetched` (html/json/text switched, "other"→415, "pdf"→extractPDF); `doFetch`'s switch routes "text" explicitly so a PDF never runs `clean.Text` first. New `internal/api/pdf.go`: `DefaultPDFTTL`/`DefaultPDFMaxQuestionChunks` (task 07), `runner()`/`pool()` defaults, `extractPDF` (pool key `callerClass|SHA256`, two-value assert, `fmt.Errorf("pdf: bad result %T")`), `pdfError` (422 for the five pdftext errors + panic default, 503+RetryAfter 10 for ErrBusy, 429 for ErrCallerBusy), `renderPDF` (`pdfdoc.Render`, whole text or map). `doFetch` returns the 4th `doc *pdftext.Doc`; digest uses `pdfdoc.Full(doc)` (computed once) as content, clean uses `renderPDF.Content`, envelope `pdf` object has pages/title/outline/extracted/first/last/map/grep_hits/note, raw mode→400. Scrape markdown=`renderPDF.Content`, html="", `metadata.numPages`=doc.Pages. 7 of 10 given tests pass under -race -count=3; the 3 failures (`TestPDFPagesAndGrep`, `TestPDFCache`, `TestPDFQuestionTooLong`) are task 07 tests that reference fields not in this task, exactly as the task doc (lines 145, 157-158) predicts; nothing else fails. Given files byte-identical. |
| p5a/08-digest-cli-docs | 2026-09-26 | done | 1 | gate: ok | none | Added the page-cite sentence to the digest `systemPrompt` ("When the document has `--- page N ---` markers, cite the page of each fact as (p. N).") and set `PromptVersion = "3"`. Added the `sift_pdf_extract_total{outcome}`, `sift_pdf_extract_seconds`, `sift_pdf_pages_total`, `sift_pdf_pool_wait_seconds`, `sift_pdf_cache_hits_total` series to `internal/metrics` (`pdf.go` package) and wired `ObservePDF`/`ObservePDFWait`/`PDFCacheHit` into `internal/api/pdf.go` (`ObservePDF` once per call after `extractPDF`, outcome classified by `pdfOutcome` so raw text never becomes a label; `ObservePDFWait` only when the caller actually waited on `pool().Do`; `PDFCacheHit` on fresh hits and 304s). Refactored `cmd/sift/fetchcmd.go` into a `fetchOpts` struct with `parseFetchOpts` (returns `fetchOpts`, not `string, error`) and a `fetchBody(o fetchOpts) map[string]any` that does the digest/clean default and adds `pages`/`grep` only when set; `--pages`/`--grep` added to `fetchValueFlags`. Updated `skill/SKILL.md` (PDFs section; removed PDF mention from the 415 row). Unit: `nix/module.nix` `MemoryMax = "1G"` (one line). README: added a "PDF documents" section covering detection, limits (100 MB/120 s download, 60 s extraction, 2,000 pages), the child process, the 2-slot/4-wait/20 s pool, the 24 h conditional-GET cache, the answers, the task-06 errors table, and the metrics; noted the `go-pdfkit/extract` v0.3.0 engine chosen by the `docs/P5a.md` §3 bake-off. All tests pass under -race, make gate ok, three given files byte-identical, nix diff is one line. |
| p5a/07-api-cache-pages | 2026-09-26 | done | 1 | gate: ok | none | Implemented the PDF document cache with revalidation in `doFetch`: `pdfFromCache` (miss / fresh within `PDFTTL` / stale → `FetchIf` with 304→`TouchPDF`+answer-fresh / 200→return response with ok=false and no second GET) and `storePDF` after `extractPDF` (`ContentHash=res.SHA256`, ETag/Last-Modified from headers, FetchedAt=now, Meta=JSON of `doc.Meta`, Pages=`doc.Text`). `pages`/`grep` passed into `pdfdoc.Options` in `renderPDF`; `ErrBadPages`/`ErrBadGrep`→400 with the error's own text, non-PDF→400 "pages and grep apply to PDFs only" before the doc block. Question limit in digest mode: `n=len(digest.Split(pdfdoc.Full(doc), ChunkTokens))`, `n>PDFMaxQuestionChunks`→422 "document too long for question (n chunks); use grep or pages" before any digest call. Envelope `cached` set true for cache answers via the synthetic cache res's empty body (`len(res.Body)==0`); the one `doFetch` change beyond the rule-1 call was reusing that 200 response instead of a second `Fetch`. Added `fmt` import to api.go. Given file byte-identical; make gate ok. |
## P5a review (owner, 2026-09-26)
Checked: 8 task commits (`13365a2` … `7e78de6`), each with the `Co-Authored-By: ornith-1.5-35b-a3b`
trailer; every given file byte-identical to its plan copy; `internal/guard`, `internal/auth`,
`go.mod`, `go.sum`, `vendor/` untouched; `nix/module.nix` changed only in `MemoryMax`; `make gate`
ok; `go test -race -count=3 ./...` ok.
End-to-end with the real binary, the real guard, a real cache and dixie's 9B for digests, on
public PDFs: Attention (15 pp, whole text, 1.9 s), GPT-3 (75 pp, map, 2.6 s), NIST SP 800-63B,
the RP2040 datasheet (642 pp, 4.5 s), Karpathy's thesis (14.7 MB, 16 s including download).
`pages` and `grep` from the cache in about 1.5 ms; a `question` digest with correct page
citations (p. 1, 7, 8) in 11 s; `/v2/scrape` shape; `sift_pdf_*` metrics; no title or text in
the logs.
| # | Finding | Severity | Fault | Fix |

| 1 | **No outline for any LaTeX (hyperref) or Acrobat PDF** — every arXiv paper and the NIST PDF showed 0 items (qpdf: 22–120). Named destinations were skipped (task 02 said to skip them), `/Dest`/`/A`/titles were not resolved when indirect, and reader's `Dict.Get` returns `reader.Null{}` for a missing key, so the `/A` branch never ran. | high (feature absent on most papers) | task + model | owner: name-tree and `/Dests` lookup, `resolve` treats Null as absent, indirect titles; `pdftest` `NamedDests`; `TestOutlineNamedDestinations` (fails on the old code) |

| 3 | Output over `MaxText` returned only at the deadline (the runner waited for stderr EOF while the child blocked on a full stdout pipe). | low | model | owner: check size first; `TestRunnerTooMuchTextFailsFast` (30 s on the old code) |
| 4 | Stale-cache revalidation ran outside `acquire`, so it was not counted against the per-caller/host limit. | low | task (said "before acquire") | owner |
| 5 | Fetch `Accept` lacked `application/pdf` (P5a §4). | low | task (not in task 01's rules) | owner |
Process: 1 owner test deadlock (task 01, 55 min), 1 oversized task (06, looped 3 h, split),
2 hangs from OpenCode 1.15 waiting on a piped stdin (driver fixed), 1 refusal-ending (task 01),
1 malformed tool call (task 04). Every task that ran to the gate passed it first time.

# P5a task 06: the PDF path through `/v1/fetch` and `/v2/scrape`
**Branch:** `p5a` (`git switch p5a`; `git status --short` must be empty, otherwise stop)
**Commit subject:** `api: serve PDFs — extraction in the child under the pool, full text or map, errors`
> This task is half of the original task 06, which proved too large for one session. Task 07
> adds the cache, `pages`, `grep` and the question limit. Do only what is here.
## Goal
A PDF URL fetched through `/v1/fetch` (mode `clean`) or `/v2/scrape` is extracted in the child
process under the pool and answered with the whole text (page markers) or the map. Its
failures get the errors below. **No cache in this task** (every request fetches and extracts);
**no `pages` or `grep`**.
## Files
- Copy: `internal/api/pdf_test.go` (the whole given file; 7 of its 10 tests must pass after
this task, listed in Done when)
- Create: `internal/api/pdf.go`: every function named below lives here
- Modify: `internal/api/api.go`, only the hooks in rule 6; `internal/fetch/fetch.go`, only
the `RetryAfter` field in rule 5; `docs/implementer-log.md`
## What already exists (do not re-read these packages; this is their API)
```go
// internal/clean
func Kind(contentType string, body []byte) string // "html" | "json" | "text" | "pdf" | "other"
// internal/pdftext
type OutlineItem struct{ Title string; Page, Level int }
type Meta struct{ Pages int; Title string; Outline []OutlineItem }
type Doc struct{ Meta; Text []string; Failed []int } // Text[i] = page i+1
var ErrEncrypted, ErrUnreadable, ErrNoText, ErrTimeout, ErrTooMuchText error
type Runner struct{ Exe string; Args, Env []string; Deadline time.Duration; MaxText int64; MaxPages int }
func (r *Runner) Run(ctx context.Context, pdf []byte) (*Doc, error) // a zero Runner runs /proc/self/exe pdftext
// internal/pdfpool
var ErrBusy, ErrCallerBusy error
func New(slots, queue int, wait time.Duration) *Pool
func (p *Pool) Do(ctx context.Context, key, caller string, fn func(context.Context) (any, error)) (any, error)
// internal/pdfdoc
type Options struct{ Pages, Grep string; OutCap int }
type Rendered struct{ Content string; Map bool; First, Last, GrepHits int; Note string }
func Render(doc *pdftext.Doc, opt Options) (Rendered, error)
func Full(doc *pdftext.Doc) string
```
## Interfaces added here
```go
package api
const (
DefaultPDFTTL = 24 * time.Hour // used by task 07; declare it now
DefaultPDFMaxQuestionChunks = 200 // used by task 07; declare it now
)
// in Server (after Prom):
PDFRunner *pdftext.Runner // nil = &pdftext.Runner{}
PDFPool *pdfpool.Pool // nil = pdfpool.New(2, 4, 20*time.Second), built once (sync.Once)
PDFTTL time.Duration // task 07
PDFMaxQuestionChunks int // task 07
// in v1Req:
Pages string `json:"pages"` // task 07
Grep string `json:"grep"` // task 07
```
## Rules
1. **`doFetch` and `cleanFetched` gain a fourth result, `doc *pdftext.Doc`,** which is nil unless
the resource is a PDF. Each uses `clean.Kind(res.ContentType, res.Body)` in place of today's
`MediaKind`/`Sniff` pair.
- `"other"` stays the 415 exactly as today.
- `"pdf"` calls `s.extractPDF(ctx, c, res)`; on success it returns
`cl = &clean.Result{Kind: "pdf", Title: doc.Title}` and the doc.
- `cleanFetched` has no caller at hand for the pool. For a PDF it returns the 415 as before:
the recover path (archive snapshots) does not serve PDFs.
2. **`func (s *Server) extractPDF(ctx context.Context, c *auth.Caller, res *fetch.Resource) (*pdftext.Doc, error)`**
- Calls `s.pool().Do(ctx, s.callerClass(c)+"|"+res.SHA256(), c.Name, fn)`, where `fn` returns
`s.runner().Run(jobCtx, res.Body)`.
- `pool()` and `runner()` apply the defaults.
- Type-assert the result with the two-value form.
3. **`func pdfError(err error) error`** maps every PDF-path error to a `*fetch.Error`:
| cause | Status | Msg | Hint | RetryAfter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| `pdftext.ErrNoText` | 422 | `no text layer (scanned PDF?)` | `ocr` | |
| `pdftext.ErrEncrypted` | 422 | `encrypted PDF (password required)` | | |
| `pdftext.ErrUnreadable` (also when wrapped) | 422 | `unreadable PDF` | | |
| `pdftext.ErrTimeout` | 422 | `pdf extraction timed out` | | |
| `pdftext.ErrTooMuchText` | 422 | `pdf text over the output limit` | | |
| `pdfpool.ErrBusy` | 503 | `pdf workers busy` | | 10 |
| `pdfpool.ErrCallerBusy` | 429 | `busy` | | |
| anything else (a panic recovered by the pool) | 422 | `unreadable PDF` | | |
Use `errors.Is`. A PDF never produces a 500.
4. **Rendering** (`pdf.go`), `func (s *Server) renderPDF(doc *pdftext.Doc) (pdfdoc.Rendered, error)`:
`pdfdoc.Render(doc, pdfdoc.Options{OutCap: s.OutCap})`.
- **`/v1/fetch`**, mode `clean` with a doc:
- `content` is `Rendered.Content`;
- the envelope gains
`"pdf": {"pages": doc.Pages, "title": doc.Title, "outline": doc.Outline, "extracted": len(doc.Text), "first", "last", "map", "grep_hits", "note"}`,
the last five from `Rendered`;
- `sizes.raw_tokens` is the rune count of `pdfdoc.Full(doc)` / 4.
- Mode `raw` with a doc: `400 raw mode does not apply to PDFs`.
- Mode `digest` with a doc: run the digest exactly as today but with `pdfdoc.Full(doc)` as the
content. Task 07 adds the length limit before it.
- **`/v2/scrape`** with a doc:
- `markdown` is `Rendered.Content`; `html` is `""`;
- `metadata.title` is `doc.Title`;
- `metadata.numPages` is `doc.Pages`;
- `metadata.contentType` is the response's.
5. **`internal/fetch/fetch.go`:** add `RetryAfter int` to `fetch.Error` (seconds, 0 = none).
`writeFetchErr` sets the `Retry-After` header when it is non-zero, before `writeErr`. This is
the only change allowed in the fetch package.
6. **`api.go` hooks, and nothing else there:**
- the `Server` and `v1Req` fields;
- the two `Kind` switches (rule 1);
- the new result at the three call sites of `doFetch`/`cleanFetched`;
- one `if doc != nil { … }` block in `v1fetch` and in `scrape` that calls into `pdf.go`;
- the `Retry-After` line in `writeFetchErr`;
- `pdf_pages` (a count) added to the existing `fetch` and `scrape` log lines.
Never log a title, an outline or any text. Restricted callers go through the existing helpers.
## Facts
- The given test's child is the test binary itself (its `TestMain` turns into `pdftext` when
`SIFT_PDFTEXT_CHILD=1`). The rig builds `s.PDFRunner` with that environment; you never start
a child yourself outside `Runner.Run`.
- `setupAPI`, `postJSON` and `recHandler` come from `api_test.go` in the same package.
- `s.cache()` may be nil; this task never uses it.
## Steps
- [ ] **1.** `git switch p5a`; copy the given test.
- [ ] **2. See it fail:** `go test -count=1 ./internal/api/` fails to compile (undefined fields).
- [ ] **3.** `fetch.Error.RetryAfter`. **4.** `pdf.go`. **5.** The `api.go` hooks.
- [ ] **6.** `gofmt -w`; then
`go test -race -count=3 -run 'TestPDFCleanFetch|TestPDFMap|TestPDFErrors|TestPDFTimeout|TestPDFBusy|TestPDFRestrictedCaller|TestPDFScrape' ./internal/api/` → `ok`,
and `go test -race -count=1 ./internal/api/ -run 'Test[^P]'` (every existing api test) → `ok`.
- [ ] **7.** Row `p5a/06-api-pdf`. Its Gate column says `pass (7 of 10 PDF tests; 3 are task 07's)`.
Commit.
```sh
git add internal/api internal/fetch/fetch.go docs/implementer-log.md
git commit -F .state/commit-msg.txt
```
## Done when
- The seven named tests pass under `-race -count=3`, and every non-PDF api test passes.
- The three remaining given tests fail only on `pages`, `grep`, the cache or the question
limit: `TestPDFPagesAndGrep`, `TestPDFCache`, `TestPDFQuestionTooLong`. That is task 07.
`make gate` is expected red on exactly those three and nothing else. Say so in the log row.
- The given file is byte-identical.
## Stop and report if
- Any of the seven fails for a reason that needs the cache, `pages` or `grep`.

# P5a task 06: PDFs through `/v1/fetch` and `/v2/scrape`
**Branch:** `p5a` (`git switch p5a`; `git status --short` must be empty, otherwise stop)
**Commit subject:** `api: serve PDFs — child extraction via the pool, document cache, map, pages, grep`
## Goal
Wire tasks 01–05 into the API. A PDF URL fetched through `/v1/fetch` or `/v2/scrape` is:
1. extracted once in the child, under the pool;
2. cached per page;
3. answered with the whole text, the map, a page range, or grep results.
Later requests for the same document are served from the cache, revalidated after 24 h with a
conditional GET. `question` digests the document's text, page markers included, unless the
document is too long.
## Files
- Copy: `internal/api/pdf_test.go`
- Create: `internal/api/pdf.go` — everything PDF lives here
- Modify: `internal/api/api.go` — **only** the hooks listed in rule 7. `api.go` is already 840
lines; do not move code into it.
- Modify: `docs/implementer-log.md`
## Interfaces
```go
package api
const (
DefaultPDFTTL = 24 * time.Hour
DefaultPDFMaxQuestionChunks = 200
)
// in Server:
PDFRunner *pdftext.Runner // nil = &pdftext.Runner{} (the child is /proc/self/exe pdftext)
PDFPool *pdfpool.Pool // nil = pdfpool.New(2, 4, 20*time.Second)
PDFTTL time.Duration // 0 = DefaultPDFTTL
PDFMaxQuestionChunks int // 0 = DefaultPDFMaxQuestionChunks
// in v1Req:
Pages string `json:"pages"`
Grep string `json:"grep"`
```
Defaults are applied where the field is read: a zero `Server` from `New` must work. Build the
default pool once, with a `sync.Once` — never one per request.
## Rules
1. **Cache first.**
- Before fetching, look up `dcache.PDFKey(rawURL, s.callerClass(c))` in `s.cache()` (which
may be nil: then there is no cache).
- **Fresh** (now − `FetchedAt` < TTL): build the `*pdftext.Doc` from the entry (unmarshal
`Meta`; `Text` = `Pages`). Answer with no network call and no child. The source is marked
`"cached": true`.
- **Stale:** `s.Fetch.FetchIf(ctx, rawURL, e.ETag, e.LastModified)`.
- 304 → `TouchPDF(key, now)` and answer from the entry, with no child.
- 200 → go on as for a new document.
- **Not cached:** the usual `s.Fetch.Fetch`, under the existing `acquire`/`release`.
2. **A PDF** is `clean.Kind(res.ContentType, res.Body) == "pdf"`. Every other kind goes through
today's path unchanged. Use `clean.Kind` in place of the `MediaKind`/`Sniff` pair in both
`doFetch` and `cleanFetched`. `"other"` stays `415`.
3. **Extraction.**
- Call `s.PDFPool.Do(ctx, class+"|"+res.SHA256(), c.Name, fn)`, where `fn` runs
`s.PDFRunner.Run(jobCtx, res.Body)`.
- The key is the **content hash**, so identical bytes are extracted once however many callers
or URLs ask. The key includes the caller class, so a restricted caller never shares a job
with the fleet.
- Then `PutPDF` under the URL key with: the content hash; the response's `ETag` and
`Last-Modified`; `FetchedAt` = now; `Meta` = the JSON of `doc.Meta`; `Pages` = `doc.Text`.
4. **Errors**, all through the existing `writeErr` shape (`{"success":false,"error":…,"hint":…}`):
| cause | status | error | hint |
|---|---|---|---|
| `pdftext.ErrNoText` | 422 | `no text layer (scanned PDF?)` | `ocr` |
| `pdftext.ErrEncrypted` | 422 | `encrypted PDF (password required)` | |
| `pdftext.ErrUnreadable` | 422 | `unreadable PDF` | |
| `pdftext.ErrTimeout` | 422 | `pdf extraction timed out` | |
| `pdftext.ErrTooMuchText` | 422 | `pdf text over the output limit` | |
| `pdfpool.ErrBusy` | 503 | `pdf workers busy`, **header `Retry-After: 10`** | |
| `pdfpool.ErrCallerBusy` | 429 | `busy` | |
| `pdfdoc.ErrBadPages` / `ErrBadGrep` | 400 | the error's text | |
| `pages` or `grep` on a non-PDF | 400 | `pages and grep apply to PDFs only` | |
| `question` on a document over `PDFMaxQuestionChunks` chunks | 422 | `document too long for question (N chunks); use grep or pages` | |
A PDF path never answers 500 for anything the document did.
5. **`/v1/fetch`.**
- **Mode `clean`:** `content` is `pdfdoc.Render(doc, {Pages, Grep, OutCap: s.OutCap}).Content`.
- The envelope gains:
```
"pdf": {"pages", "title", "outline", "extracted", "first", "last", "map", "grep_hits", "note"}
```
`extracted` is `len(doc.Text)`; `outline` is `doc.Outline`; the rest come from `Rendered`.
- **Mode `digest`:** the text is `pdfdoc.Full(doc)`. First count
`len(digest.Split(full, digest.ChunkTokens))`; if it is over `PDFMaxQuestionChunks`, answer
the 422 above **before** any model call. Otherwise run the digest as for any page, with
`full` as the content.
- **Mode `raw`** on a PDF: 400 `raw mode does not apply to PDFs`.
- `sizes.raw_tokens` is the rune count of `Full(doc)` / 4 for a PDF (there is no body on a
cache hit).
6. **`/v2/scrape`.**
- `markdown` is `Render(doc, {OutCap: s.OutCap}).Content`; `html` is `""`.
- `metadata.title` is `doc.Title`; `metadata.numPages` is `doc.Pages`; `metadata.contentType`
is the response's (`application/pdf` on a cache hit).
7. **`api.go` hooks (the only edits allowed there):**
- the four `Server` fields and two `v1Req` fields;
- the `Kind` switch in `doFetch`/`cleanFetched`, now returning the doc;
- one call into `pdf.go` in `v1fetch` and in `scrape`;
- `Retry-After` in `writeFetchErr` for a 503.
`doFetch` and `cleanFetched` may gain a result, `doc *pdftext.Doc` (nil unless a PDF).
8. **Logging:**
- Keep today's `fetch`/`scrape` log lines and add `pdf_pages` (a count) to them.
- Never log the title, the outline or any text.
- A restricted caller's lines go through the existing helpers (host blanked); the given test
reads every log record.
## Facts
- The tests set `s.Digest = &digest.Engine{Cache: db}` only to give `s.cache()` a database: no
model is configured.
- The child in the tests is the test binary (`TestMain` in the given file).
- `setupAPI`, `postJSON` and `recHandler` come from `api_test.go` in the same package.
- `requestDeadline` (210 s) and `writeTimeout` (240 s) were raised by the owner for this path:
download ≤ 120 s + queue ≤ 20 s + extraction ≤ 60 s.
## Steps
- [ ] **1.** `git switch p5a`; copy the given test. **2. See it fail** (undefined fields).
- [ ] **3.** `pdf.go` (cache, extraction, errors, render), then the `api.go` hooks.
- [ ] **4.** `gofmt -w`; `go test -race -count=3 ./internal/api/` → `ok`: the new tests and
every existing api test (search, scrape, restricted logging, write timeout).
- [ ] **5.** `make gate`. **6.** Row `p5a/06-api`; commit.
```sh
git add internal/api docs/implementer-log.md
git commit -F .state/commit-msg.txt
```
## Done when
- `go test -race -count=3 ./internal/api/` is ok; `make gate` ok; given file byte-identical;
`api.go` grew by the hooks only (the owner will diff it).
## Stop and report if
- A rule here contradicts an existing api test.
- The pool's default wait (20 s) makes a test take longer than the test allows. The given tests
set their own pool where timing matters.

# P5a task 07: the PDF document cache, `pages`, `grep`, and the question limit
**Branch:** `p5a` (`git switch p5a`; `git status --short` must be empty, otherwise stop)
**Commit subject:** `api: PDF cache with revalidation; pages and grep; refuse questions on very long documents`
## Goal
Task 06 serves PDFs but fetches and extracts every time. After this task, a PDF already
extracted is answered from the cache: fresh for 24 h, then revalidated with a conditional GET.
An agent can ask for `pages` or `grep`. A question on a document too long for the digest is
refused with a pointer to those two.
## Files
- Copy: nothing (the given `internal/api/pdf_test.go` came in task 06)
- Modify: `internal/api/pdf.go` (all new logic), `internal/api/api.go` (only the call in rule 1
and the two request fields' use in rule 3), `docs/implementer-log.md`
## What already exists
- Task 06's `extractPDF`, `pdfError`, `renderPDF`, the `Server` fields (`PDFTTL`,
`PDFMaxQuestionChunks`), the `v1Req` fields (`Pages`, `Grep`), and `DefaultPDFTTL` /
`DefaultPDFMaxQuestionChunks`.
- `internal/dcache`:
```go
type PDFEntry struct{ ContentHash, ETag, LastModified string; FetchedAt time.Time; Meta []byte; Pages []string }
func PDFKey(url, callerClass string) string
func (d *DB) PutPDF(key string, e PDFEntry)
func (d *DB) GetPDF(key string) (PDFEntry, bool)
func (d *DB) TouchPDF(key string, fetchedAt time.Time)
```
A nil `*DB` is a no-op.
- `internal/fetch`: `func (f *Fetcher) FetchIf(ctx, rawURL, etag, lastModified string) (*Resource, error)`.
A 304 returns `Status 304`, an empty body and a nil error.
- `internal/digest`: `Split(text string, maxTok int) []string` and `ChunkTokens`.
## Rules
1. **Cache first, in `doFetch`**, before `acquire` and `s.Fetch.Fetch`: call
`s.pdfFromCache(ctx, c, rawURL) (res *fetch.Resource, doc *pdftext.Doc, ok bool, err error)`.
The key is `dcache.PDFKey(rawURL, s.callerClass(c))`; the cache is `s.cache()` (may be nil).
- **Miss:** `ok == false`; go on as today.
- **Fresh** (`time.Since(e.FetchedAt) < ttl`, where `ttl` is `s.PDFTTL` or `DefaultPDFTTL`):
build the doc from the entry (unmarshal `Meta` into `doc.Meta`; `doc.Text = e.Pages`), and a
synthetic `res`: `URL` and `FinalURL` = rawURL, `Status` 200,
`ContentType "application/pdf"`, `FetchedAt` = `e.FetchedAt`, `Hash` = `e.ContentHash`, no
body. No network call and no child.
- **Stale:** `s.Fetch.FetchIf(ctx, rawURL, e.ETag, e.LastModified)`.
- 304 → `TouchPDF(key, now)`, then answer as fresh.
- 200 → return that response with `ok == false`, so `doFetch` goes on without a second
GET: the new document is extracted and stored.
- An error → return it.
- The source in the `/v1/fetch` envelope says `"cached": true` for an answer from the cache
(fresh or after a 304).
2. **Store after extraction:** after `extractPDF` succeeds, `PutPDF` under the URL key with:
- `ContentHash: res.SHA256()`;
- `ETag` and `Last-Modified` from the response headers;
- `FetchedAt: now`;
- `Meta`: the JSON of `doc.Meta`;
- `Pages: doc.Text`.
3. **`pages` and `grep` (`/v1/fetch`):**
- Pass `req.Pages` and `req.Grep` into `pdfdoc.Options` in `renderPDF`.
- `pdfdoc.ErrBadPages` or `pdfdoc.ErrBadGrep` (use `errors.Is`) → 400, with the error's own
text as the message.
- `pages` or `grep` on a non-PDF → `400 pages and grep apply to PDFs only`.
4. **Question limit:** in mode `digest` with a doc, compute
`n := len(digest.Split(pdfdoc.Full(doc), digest.ChunkTokens))`. If `n` exceeds
`s.PDFMaxQuestionChunks` (or its default), answer
`422 document too long for question (<n> chunks); use grep or pages` **before** any digest
call.
## Steps
- [ ] **1.** `git switch p5a`. **2. See the three tests fail:**
`go test -count=1 -run 'TestPDFPagesAndGrep|TestPDFCache|TestPDFQuestionTooLong' ./internal/api/`.
- [ ] **3.** `pdfFromCache` and the store (rules 1–2), **4.** pages and grep, **5.** the question limit.
- [ ] **6.** `gofmt -w`; `go test -race -count=3 ./internal/api/` → `ok` (all ten PDF tests and
every existing test).
- [ ] **7.** `make gate` → `gate: ok`. **8.** Row `p5a/07-api-cache-pages`; commit.
```sh
git add internal/api docs/implementer-log.md
git commit -F .state/commit-msg.txt
```
## Done when
- `go test -race -count=3 ./internal/api/` is ok; `make gate` ok; the given file is still
byte-identical.

## Changes during the run
(none yet)
- 2026-09-25, task 01: **owner test fault.** `TestFetchIf` took its mutex with `defer mu.Unlock()`
and then made a third request, whose server handler needs that mutex: a deadlock that surfaced as
a 20 s upstream timeout. Ornith spent 55 minutes debugging it correctly (its notes had the
handler blocked on `mu.Lock` at the test line) and ended on a refused `/tmp` read, with the
implementation done but debug prints in `pdf.go` and a `zz_debug_test.go`. Owner fixed the test
(copy the slice under the lock, release before the next request), removed the debug scaffolding,
and resumed the session to finish and commit.
- 2026-09-26, task 06 (the original, API integration in one task): **owner sizing fault.** The
session looped for 3 h 13 min (731 KB log, repeated context compaction, false beliefs about
the tree: "the given test is committed", "the child is /bin/true") without a compiling
`pdf.go`. It is the same failure as crossbar v1/06: one task spanning detection, pool,
errors, rendering, cache, pages, grep, digest and scrape. Killed by pid. Split into
**06-api-pdf** (detection, extraction under the pool, errors, full text/map, scrape; 7 of the
10 given tests) and **07-api-cache-pages** (cache and revalidation, pages, grep, the question
limit; the other 3). The old 07 is now 08. Both task texts state the exact API of tasks 01–05,
so the model need not re-read five packages. The working tree was reset: the draft
`pdf.go`, the `api.go` hooks and a `fetch.Error.RetryAfter` field that was outside the task's
files (task 06 now allows exactly that field).
- 2026-09-26, the given test's gate note: task 06 ends with `make gate` red on exactly the three
task-07 tests (the pattern crossbar v2.2 used); the gate runs green after 07.
- 2026-09-26, tasks 06–08 after the split: 52, 19 and 14 min, each first-gate. `run-plan`: all
tasks done at 04:37.
- **Owner review** (details in `docs/implementer-log.md`): end-to-end on real PDFs (arXiv, NIST,
RP2040 datasheet, a PhD thesis) against dixie's 9B found one real defect the given tests could
not see — **no outline for any LaTeX or Acrobat PDF**: named destinations were skipped (my task
02 said to skip them) and reader's `Dict.Get` answers `reader.Null{}`, not nil, for a missing
key, which hid the `/A` action. Fixed with a name-tree lookup; `internal/pdftest` gained
`NamedDests` (owner change to a given file; the copy here is the new reference). Also fixed: a
race on the default pool, revalidation outside the per-host limit (my spec), the runner waiting
for the deadline on over-limit output, `Accept` lacking `application/pdf` (my spec).

## PDFs
PDFs work: `sift fetch` extracts them and returns the text. A short one comes back whole; a
long one comes back as a map — an outline with page numbers, then the first pages. Then:
- `sift fetch URL --pages 41-60` for a page range, `--grep 'pattern'` for matching lines, or
`--question "…"` for a digest that cites each fact as `(p. N)`.
- Scanned PDFs have no text layer: sift reports `no text layer (scanned PDF?)` — point it at an
OCR source rather than trying to fix it here.
Never download a PDF and run `pdftotext` yourself; `sift` is the sanctioned extractor.

# PDF fixtures
Only the two encrypted files are binary; every other PDF the tests use is built at test time by
`internal/pdftest`.
- `encrypted-user.pdf`: the `pdftest` three-page document, AES-256, user password `userpw`,
owner password `ownerpw`. Made with
`qpdf --encrypt userpw ownerpw 256 -- three.pdf encrypted-user.pdf`.
- `encrypted-owner.pdf`: the same document, AES-256 with an empty user password
(opens without one), owner password `ownerpw`:
`qpdf --encrypt "" ownerpw 256 -- three.pdf encrypted-owner.pdf`.
Both contain the phrases "Chapter one begins here." (page 1) and
"The quick brown fox is on page two." (page 2).
Binary file not shown.
